Epidemics: From HIV to Zika

Presented by Nancy L. Haigwood, Ph.D. Professor and Director, Oregon National Primate Research Center, OHSU Adjunct Professor, Molecular Microbiology & Immunololgy

It seems like every day there is news about some outbreak of viral diseases.  In the 1980s it was AIDS.  Then came Hanta virus in the desert southwest, West Nile virus in many parts of the U.S., Ebola in Africa, and now Zika virus in South America and the Caribbean.  Why do we keep getting viral outbreaks?  What is being done to stop them?

Come learn how viral outbreaks are a natural part of our environment, and how recent improvements in science and medicine are making it easier to track, treat, and vaccinate against these viruses.
