New Treatments for Children with Chronic Disease-Related Weight Loss

Daniel Marks, MD, PhD, Credit Unions for Kids Professor of Pediatric Research, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital

Chronic disease-associated weight loss, or cachexia (ka-kex-ee-ah), is one of the main determinants of quality of life and of mortality, especially in children. Children living with kidney failure, cancer, cystic fibrosis and heart disease can be very thin. That involuntary weight loss and failure to grow can have devastating consequences. Why chronic illness causes weight loss and what can be done to treat this condition will be the focus of this talk by Dr. Daniels Marks, physician and researcher in hormonal disorders at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
